25 players to watch in Muskegon-area football for 2020 season
By Scott DeCamp | sdecamp1@mlive.com
With kickoff only a few days away for most of the high school football teams in the state, what better time than now to highlight some of the top players in the Muskegon area.
The regular season is being shortened to six games, but there is no shortage of talent here.

Grand Haven senior lineman Landon VanBeek catches his breath during the conditioning portion of the Buccaneers' first official football practice of the 2020 season Monday, Aug. 10, 2020, at Gene Rothi Field in Grand Haven, Mich.
Landon VanBeek, Grand HavenThe 6-foot-4, 240-pound senior lineman is a returning All-OK Red Conference performer, who also earned all-area accolades last season for the Buccaneers. Last season, then-coach Joe Nelson called VanBeek the team’s top O-lineman, as he graded out the highest every week and was consistent in the trenches and downfield. VanBeek will be counted on to lead the offensive line again this fall. As a defensive end last year, he notched 37 tackles with five tackles for loss and three sacks. VanBeek is being recruited by several Division II schools as well as Division I FCS programs. |
Grand Haven junior Owen Worthington poses for a photo after the Buccaneers' first official practice of the 2020 season on Monday, Aug. 10, 2020, at Gene Rothi Field in Grand Haven, Mich.
Owen Worthington, Grand HavenThe 6-foot-2, 210-pound junior quarterback was elevated to the varsity team the last couple games of the 2019 season, when the Buccaneers advanced to the Division 1 district finals. Worthington, the younger brother of former Bucs standout Connor Worthington (now at Michigan Tech), gained some valuable experience as a backup QB last fall. Worthington also stepped in at kicker after the starter was injured, and he’s got good range. Worthington, who has been working out with Ryan VanDyke’s Quarterback University, is an emerging college prospect. |
