Grand Haven is going back to an old playbook and hiring a football coach who has previously led the Buccaneers to success.
The school announced this afternoon that Mike Farley, who guided Grand Haven to three playoff berths and one OK Red Conference title in the 2006-13 seasons, will be returning to lead the Buccaneers program.
Farley fills the position vacated by the resignation of Joe Nelson, who stepped down early last month after going 10-19 in three seasons at the helm.

The Buccaneers are coming off a 6-5 season that featured the program’s first playoff appearance since 2011 and first postseason win in 10 years.
Farley previously coached at Grand Haven for eight years, compiling a 44-32 record there. In 2009, he was chosen the Michigan Associated Press’ Divisions 1-2 coach of the year.
In May 2014, Farley resigned from Grand Haven to accept the offensive coordinator position at South Effingham High School, a Class 5A school near Savannah, Ga., in a competitive football region. He went to South Effingham to join his former college coach and mentor, Donnie Revell.
Farley returned to Michigan last year, leading Ionia’s football program for one season that resulted in a 3-6 record.
In 24 seasons as a head high school football coach, Farley is 79-60. During his previous tenure with Grand Haven, Farley sent 34 players on to the college football ranks, including kicker John Potter, who made it to the NFL.

Farley’s other coaching stops include Covington Holmes in Kentucky (12-11) and Comstock (20-11). He’s made seven playoff appearances as a head coach. In 2005, Farley led Comstock to conference and district championships.
A native of Leslie, located south of Lansing, Farley served as South Effingham’s offensive coordinator for five years.
Farley is a 1987 Leslie High School alumnus. He played linebacker for Revell at Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.), where he was an All-American. He’s also played semi-pro football.
